Art and Technology
I have been using art and technology my whole life. My father was a professor at UCL and a Scientist. He developed the use of optical fibres for broadband communication. I thus had access to a computer from a very young age. My mother is artistic. Her father was a cartoonist with Punch magazine. I am a cross between my parents. I inherited my skill set (Nature). I was lucky to grew up with access to computers and art. I could thus develop my skills (Nurture).
Teacher
A teacher is a person who helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or values. The word ‘teacher” is a designation for the office, position, and profession for someone who devotes himself in the field of education through patterned educational interaction, formal and systematic.
Professionalism means conducting oneself with responsibility, integrity, accountability, and excellence. It means communicating effectively and appropriately and always finding a way to be productive. Educational institutions expect a teacher to be a well qualified professional, neat, tidy, organised, healthy, smartly dressed, well-prepared, and equipped with a computer with VGA and HDMI sockets for displaying presentations, etc. A teacher is expected to arrive in time (before the school starts) and not on time. They should be clean and ready for the days work..,
The responsibilities of a teacher vary from institution to institution. They can include
- Planning lesson plans and schemes of work
- Creating teaching resources
- Organising day trips
- Organising special days (the activities that took place on Children’s day for example)
- Mentoring students
- Teaching students afterschool or privately online/in person
- Moderating and marking exams
- Assessing students
- Collaborated with other staff and/or parents
- Managed classrooms
- Decorated classrooms
- Dressed up and acted as Santa Claus!
- Spoken to an audience on stage
- Delegating responsibility
- Dealing with emergencies, sick or late students, etc,
- Understanding, knowing and complying with school rules and the law
- Being confident with school technology (VGA, HDMI, projectors, interactive whiteboards, etc)
- Keeping students engaged with entertaining activities
Multitasking refers to the ability to work on and complete multiple tasks simultaneously. While this is relatively easy to achieve if your objective is to finish a bag of chips while watching TV, in the workplace, it isn’t usually possible. Most of us simply can’t do two tasks at once It is a skill that teachers must have and develop in order to progress.
In almost every class, there will be things that happen that simply cannot be planned for. A teacher will slowly learn how to deal with these unexpected events the best way they can.
Schools and technology
Over the years I have worked a different hardware and software. During lockdowns, the use of technology often increases significantly. I have experience with…
- Creating resources for school intranets
- Online teaching (Skype, Google meet, FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.)
- Creating MS Office resources (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Access, Outlook express, One note, etc)
- Using the google suite (advanced search engine, classroom, slides, docs, forms, chat)
- Extending functionality using add-ons and plugins, etc (Google translate, grammarly, etc)
- Educational resources online (nearpod, kami, quizlet, kahoot, pear deck, powtoon, etc)
- Creating vector and bitmap graphics (jpg, png, gif, psd, etc)
- Creating PDFs
- School facilities (VGA, HDMI, projectors, interactive whiteboards, etc)
- Students access to technology. Not all students have mobile phones. They thus require different solutions
