Topsy Turvy

Sadly, we appear to be living in Topsy turvy times. Liars, law-breakers and buffoons get to be presidents and prime ministers.

We are consistently lied to – by governments, by advertising, by marketing, by sales people, by authority figures, by financial institutions, by “religious” institutions, by television, by radio, by media – yet ordinary citizens are expected to be honest!

We are constantly presented with illusions that portray “real life” that is nothing more than a means by which to drive consumerism – yet, when we try to “be our real self”, we are looked down upon or ignored completely.

Many artists are deluded into believing that we should not communicate what our true feelings or emotions are – and that they must be of a certain “criteria” to be acceptable.

  • Most of the population bases their self-esteem on the opinions of others – not on their own true self.
  • We accept fear and anxiety as normal.
  • We accept “authority” as normal.
  • Social media platforms encourage the “me” culture. France Haugen testified at the Senate. She has said, “I’m here today because I believe Facebook’s products harm children, stoke division, and weaken our democracy,” she said in her opening statement to lawmakers. “These problems are solvable. A safer, free-speech respecting, more enjoyable social media is possible. But there is one thing that I hope everyone takes away from these disclosures, it is that Facebook can change, but is clearly not going to do so on its own.”. In fact Facebook executives “have even shut down efforts to make the website less divisive!”, Wall Street Journal

Possible solutions

Wealth redistribution through steeper inheritance taxes, promotion of broader ownership (e.g., greater worker ownership), and socialization or redistribution of capital and land equally to all citizens are ways to reduce income inequality indirectly, as they will equalize the unearned income that derives from ownership of wealth.

It is obvious to me that media is full of lies designed to indoctrinate its consumers. The real problem is how to get away from it. In the UK, almost everyone has a television and high streets have many newspapers shops etc. The news is everywhere and hard to escape. Many people believe what they read and mimic what was said. This is how lies are propagated.

Capitalism and greed are major root causes for the problems listed. The real question is how to move forward. This issue will become tougher as populations grow and global warning forces many people to move.

Governments may need to control the birth rate, introduce military law and enforce strict rules (to stop theft etc). There is no doubt in mind that my generation need to tell the truth and somehow get governments to listen.

People that think ahead and plan (buy a property in Canada for example, would be well placed…

I suspect many people will have no choice but to move to a cooler climate north or south, and maybe relearn how to live off the land. Human pillaging of earths natural resources will make those that are left increasingly expensive, etc.
